How to Determine livestock values and weights

When you are setting up your Farm Focus you will need to record a livestock value for each of the stock classes. This information is useful so that you can see any changes in capital value as you increase or decrease stock numbers throughout the season.

Livestock values

When you are setting up your Farm Focus you will need to record a livestock value for each of the stock classes.

This information will flow through into your reports, in particular your EFS report, and automatically enter an adjustment figure if you have increased or decreased stock numbers throughout the season.

The adjustment is calculated by taking (the closing number of each stock class multiplied by the closing value) minus (the opening number of each stock class multiplied by the opening value).

This ensures the performance reports are reporting on true farm profitability, accounting for cash as we well as changes in stock.

Where to enter the values

In Farm Focus, go to >Settings >Production >Livestock values.

Use the arrow to drop down the list of stock classes, then enter the opening and closing values here.
The opening and closing numbers can be the same if there is no change in value, being mindful that all stock age-up at the end of the financial year, so for example an animal will be a Two Tooth Ewe at opening, but will age-up and close as a Mixed Age Ewe.

What values to use?

If you have stock values in mind, then enter these. If you are unsure, then a good starting point is to use the National Average Market Values which is set out each year by Inland Revenue. The schedule can be found by typing Inland Revenue National Average Market Values (or NAMV) into your search engine.

You can also consult with your advisors to understand what the relevant stock value might be for each class.

Livestock weights

When you are setting up your Farm Focus you will need to record a livestock weight for each of the stock classes. This information is useful as it flows through into several key performance reports, for example the Livestock Trading report. This report uses the opening and closing weights, as well as all the movements throughout the year to determine the total kilograms of carcass weight produced, as well as the kilograms of carcass weight produced per hectare.

Where to enter the values

Go to Settings > Production > Livestock Weights.

What weights to use?

It is recommended that you enter your on-farm live weights, as there is so much variation due to breed, condition, genetics and farming system.

If you are unsure you can consult with your local advisor or stock agent to understand what the relevant stock weight might be for each class. The opening and closing weights can be the same if there is no change in average weight, being mindful that all stock age-up at the end of the financial year, so for example an animal will be a 1 Year Heifer at opening, but will age-up and close as a 2 Year Heifer.
